The day broadens student’s horizons and affords opportunities for them to learn more about their contemporaries’ cultures, food and languages while forming a greater understanding of their own place in the wider community. Students and staff are encouraged to come to school in traditional dress. The day includes a special exhibition at which staff and students host stalls with displays, food and music. Students are also afforded the opportunity to participate in a wide array of workshops, sampling activities and learning new skills. International Day 2018 Thursday 22 nd February was the school’s biggest celebration of internationalism and intercultural awareness to date. This year’s theme – “Share our similarities, celebrate our differences” conveyed unity amidst diversity. A kaleidoscope of colours, music and cultures were on show to greet primary school parents to mark International Day. Classrooms were decorated that highlighted the culture of different countries and primary students enjoyed an afternoon of food and dance from around the world. Pupils made models of various countries key cultural landmarks and displayed some of the cuisine and traditions associated with the country. Parents enjoyed a parade of all primary year groups in their adopted country colours from the play area to the school sports field.The centre-piece of the day was held in the school’s lay area where an array of beautifully decorated stalls were erected to celebrate each countries culture and cuisine. Pupils enjoyed a display of traditional German dance from the Year 6 pupils. “We feel it’s very important that we not only celebrate the rich mix of nationalities that we have at the school but also encourage the children to learn more about other cultures,” said John Smith, the school’s principal. “We’ve been celebrating International Day in some form for a decade now and it gets bigger each year.â€
